Ergonomics
After years of fits and starts, landmark ergonomics rules aimed at reducing repetitive motion injuries are now in effect in California, though legal challenges are pending. Due to a recent court order, the new regulations cover all private, municipal and state employers which have at least two workers who suffer repetitive motion injuries in a 12-mont period. If you meet these conditions, you’re required to develop a three-step ergonomics plan, including identifying what’s causing the injuries, correcting or minimizing the hazards, and training employees about your ergonomics program. An earlier exemption from the law for employers with fewer than 10 workers has been ruled illegal. If you have questions about any Health and Safety rules, contact the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board at (916)322-3640.
